Likely German or Austrian, circa 15th century. A polychromed limewood figural sculpture carved in the round from a single parcel of wood depicting the mourning Virgin Mary standing in full length draped from head to toe with her large hands clasped before her chest in prayer, her slightly downturned face bearing almond shaped eyes over a narrow nose and thin lips, the whole with remnants of polychrome. Approximate height 24.5", width 7.75", depth 6.75". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: Accompanied with copy of bill of sale dated 9/8/2004 from B. I. Howard, Somerset, England.
