German, first quarter 16th century. A medieval carved and stained oak wood relief panel of rectangular form with bas relief carving depicting the biblical story of Judges 14:5-9 with Samson slaying the lion, the figures boldly and naturalistically carved at center with Samson holding open the jaws of the slain lion set before a distant city view amid foliage, the figural panel set within a later, likely 18th century, wooden frame with simple rounded molding. Overall approximately 18.75" x 15" x 1.375". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia from B. I. Howard Antiques, Somerset, England on June 16, 2003.
