German, first quarter 16th century. A medieval carved and stained oak wood relief panel of rectangular form with bas relief carving depicting the biblical story of Judges 16:4-20 with Delilah shearing the hair of Samson while he sleeps thereby causing him to lose his heroic strength, with Philistines peering over the fence behind, the figural panel set within a later, likely 18th century, wooden frame with simple rounded molding. Overall approximately 18.125" x 15.25" x 1.375". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia from B. I. Howard Antiques, Somerset, England on June 16, 2003.
