Note: Nathaniel Jocelyn is an important American portrait artist having famously captured the likenesses of both Joseph Cinqué who led the revolt on The Amistad in 1839 (New Haven Museum) and noted abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison (National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian). The sitter, Leonard Woods, was an American theologian and pastor.
