$2,500
Set of Six Mustard Yellow-painted and Paint-decorated Bamboo-turned Tablet-back Windsor Chairs, Attributed to Jonathan Whitney, Templeton, Massachusetts, c. 1828-35, the crests with rounded edges continuing to the flat-front stiles above four spindles and shaped seats, original surface with powder-gilt grapevines in the tablets, surrounded by red and black pinstriping which continues down the stile and is repeated on the edges of the seats, ht. 33 3/4, seat ht. 18 in. Provenance: Nellie Monchelav. Estimate $1,500-2,500 The chairs are very stable and do not appear to have much in the way of structural condition problems. The seat edges are all slightly worn, and there are some front stretchers and feet which show more wear than others. Each of the spindles are most worn at the small projecting turned detail, The surface of the seats is a little drier and not as glossy as the paint on the rest of the chair, which can be an indication that the wear is commensurate with use. There is still the possibility that the chairs have minor touch-ups here and there (there is minor evidence of this under blacklight), but the decoration appears overwhelmingly original. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact.
