Zedekiah Belknap (New England, 1781-1858) Pair of Portraits of a Man and Wife Unsigned. Oil on panel, 25 3/4 x 19 1/2 in., in molded walnut frames. Condition: Thick varnish layer, no obvious retouch. Note: A label affixed to the reverse of one panel is inscribed: "These pictures were painted about 1808. In 1853 they came into possession of daughter Adeline, Mrs. Burchard of Newfane, Vermont. Forty-one years later, in 1894 they came into possession of John J. Putnam of Worcester, for him and his son John Parkhurst. Twice they were snatched from burning buildings: first from the home in Chesterfield, N.H. about the year 1845, and again from Mrs. Burchard's house in Nufane, Vt., about 1890.
