Carved Mahogany Side Chair, Nathaniel Gould, Salem, Massachusetts, 1759-81, with carved crest terminals above an owl splat, overupholstered trapezoidal seat, and cabriole front legs ending in pad feet on platforms, and shaped rear legs, ht. 37, seat. ht. 17 1/2 in. Note: In correspondence between the consignor and Kemble Widmer, and based on some specific construction techniques, this chair is confirmed as a "Type B" Side Chair from the Gould shop. Estimate $1,000-1,500 stable crack to one front leg, several small holes to back rail which appear to be evidence of long-ago insect activity.
