Georgian Mahogany and Mahogany-veneered Secretary Bookcase, England, 19th century, upper section with molded cornice, frieze with inlaid oval decoration, a pair of astragal glazed doors, interior with adjustable shelves, lower section with drawer that folds down to a writing surface, nine drawers, six pigeonholes, and a removable lap desk, two doors opening to interior with three slide-out shelves, set on low base, ht. 83, upper shelves dp. 12, writing surface ht. 29, wd. 50, dp. 23 1/2 in. Estimate $1,500-2,000 Possible marriage or reveneered (age and coloration to top and bottom are consistent but proportions are off and there are two veneer strips added to either side of the base). Feet probably cut down. Cracks in the glazing, minor veneer and molding losses, catches for fold-down writing surface do not engage, lower section doors with age cracks and butterfly repairs. Veneer chips with some areas of restoration. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
