Dutch or German School, 16th/17th Century Style Two Small Portraits of Men: Man with a Reddish Beard and White Ruff and Wilhelmus Carpentarus Unsigned, Wilhelmus inscribed indistinctly within the margins of a painted oval surrounding the figure and bearing a coat of arms in u. l. quadrant. Both oil on copper, sizes to 8 1/4 x 6 3/8 in. (21.0 x 16.2 cm). Condition: Bearded Man with major paint losses and flaking, both with craquelure, Wilhelmus with wear to the copper panel and varnish inconsistencies. Provenance: The estate of George Way. Estimate $200-300 The inscriptions around the edges of "Wilhelmus Carpentarus" are very difficult to read. However the word "Moguntiae" appears on the u.l., which corresponds to the city of Mainz. It also bears a date which appears to be 1584. Framed dimensions of the bearded man are 7 1/2 x 6 x 1/2 in. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
