School of Jan Anthonisz van Ravesteyn (Dutch, c. 1570-1657) Portrait of a Gentleman, Head and Shoulders, Wearing a Black Shirt and White Ruff Unsigned, attributed on two presentation plaques, inscribed "Ravesteyn" in ink on an older gummed label affixed to the reverse. Oil on panel, 23 1/2 x 20 in. (59.8 x 50.8 cm), framed. Condition: Panel with vertical crack located 4 in. in from the right side, stabilized on the reverse with three wood strips, old retouch, heavily varnished (perhaps masking varnish) throughout the background but not on the sitter's face, areas of thinly applied pigment. N.B. This work seems to be a copy after a van Ravesteyn portrait of an unidentified sitter, dated 1623 in the upper right, which was sold through Sotheby's London on April 14, 2011.
