Bruno Zach (Austrian, 1891-1945) Bronze Hoop Dancer Sculpture, c. 1925, signed "AUSTRIA Zach," mounted on a variegated round marble base, ht. 15 in. Note: Bruno Zach was a Ukrainian-born Austrian sculptor best known for his bronze and ivory Art Deco sculpture. A pioneering and controversial figure of the Art Nouveau era, he often focused on erotic subject matter. Born on May 6, 1891, in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, he went on to study under Hans Bitterlich and Josef Mullner at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Zach reportedly spent much of his life in Berlin and Vienna carousing with prostitutes and at nightclubs, where he found both lovers and models for his provocative sculptures.
