Widdicomb Black Lacquered Vitrine with Bronze Insert, Grand Rapids, Michigan, c. 1960, ht. 78, wd. 37 1/2, dp. 16 in. Note: John Widdicomb is a furniture manufacturer and distributor. From 1943 to 1956, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings served as designer for the company, designing modern furniture inspired by Scandinavian design. George Nakashima also worked for Widdicomb, from the 1950s to early '60s. He created the "Origin Group," pieces inspired by Japanese and Shaker furniture. Works by the Widdicomb Furniture Company are found in the collection of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Estimate $600-800 Center shelf is fixed with glass inserts. The other two shelves are glass, both with plate groove, and they are both adjustable. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
