Embroidered Chestnut Silk Coverlet, China, late 19th/early 20th century, with a central roundel of four bats and a floral spray with peonies, the motifs repeated allover with floral arrangements at the corners, 73 x 60 1/2 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner.
