Pair of Embroidered Rank Badges, China, 19th/20th century, depicting a silver pheasant signifying the fifth civil rank, with a beaded red sun and a background of Buddhist Emblems, clouds, and scrollwork, above a wave and lishui border, 11 1/4 x 12 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner.
