Pair of Embroidered Rank Badges, China, 19th/20th century, depicting an egret signifying the sixth civil rank, surrounded by bats, stylized clouds, and peonies and rockwork above crashing waves, 12 x 12 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner. Estimate $400-600 Badges stitched together at edge of border, some loose threads to borders, minor staining. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
