Three Embroidered Rank Badges, China, 19th/20th century, depicting a mandarin duck, signifying the seventh civil rank, one surrounded by peaches, bats, peonies and auspicious objects, embroidered in seed or "forbidden" stitch, the other surrounded by Daoist emblems embroidered in couched gold thread, size to 11 1/4 x 12 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner.
