John Ruskin (British, 1819-1900) Sens Titled and signed "Sens/JRuskin" l. r., dated and titled "April 14./Sens. April 14, 1846" l.l., identified and alternatively titled "...Sens Cathedral, Before Restoration" on a label from Davis & Langdale Company, Inc., New York, affixed to the backing. Ink and gouache on paper, 10 3/4 x 10 1/4 in. (27.3 x 26.0 cm), framed. Condition: Toned, floated in frame, not examined out of frame. Provenance: The Stebbins family collection, Massachusetts, purchased at Christie's, London, year unspecified. Estimate $600-800 Sheet is a heavy wove paper, evenly toned. There is a soft, nearly-vertical crease 3 inches in from the left edge (difficult to see without raking light). There is a tiny crimp to the corner lower right. The work is affixed to a mat at the two left-hand corners on verso. Glue/residue along all edges to verso. Frame is 18 x 17 1/4 x 1 in.
