William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905) Coastal Study, Approaching Storm Unsigned. Oil on canvas mounted to board, sight size 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 in. (13.2 x 21.0 cm), framed. Condition: Clusters of minute dots of retouch to left side of the sky, a small area of retouch to l.l. edge. Provenance: A Massachusetts estate. Estimate $800-1,200 The retouch to the sky is mostly u.l. and is many pin-point dots of retouch. Slightly larger single spot near u.r. and l.l. corners (see UV images). Because of the method of professional framing, it was not possible to open the mat to examine the back of the work or to completely determine the support without possibly doing damage to the matting. Frame measures 10 1/4 x 13 x 1 1/4 in. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
