Frank Henry Shapleigh (American, 1842-1906) View Through the Barn Door to the Sea Signed and dated "F. H. Shapleigh 1891" l.r. Oil on canvas, 10 x 16 1/4 in. (25.5 x 41.0 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch over old paint losses along the outside edges of the composition, paint losses to l.l. edge, small abrasion at l.c. edge, minor surface grime. N.B. Shapleigh first visited the White Mountains in 1866. The New Hampshire landscape inspired him, and he began spending his summers there, and ultimately built a home and studio in the town of Jackson, nestled in a small valley at the foot of the Presidential Range. Known for his landscapes, Shapleigh seldom painted interiors except when using the device seen here. The interior (in this instance a barn) has a large open door revealing a light-filled landscape which becomes the real subject of the work. Estimate $1,500-2,000 Dashes of retouch along the right edge of the canvas and along the lower right edges, with two small dashes at the l.c. edge beneath the chickens. Very minor dots and dashes of retouch along the topmost edge. Framed dimensions are 17 1/4 x 23 5/8 x 2 3/4 in. Frame with a label from Robinson Galleries, Inc., Miami, Florida.
