Condition: Small area of craquelure with flaking u.r., scattered small pigment losses, scattered accretions. Provenance: Collection of John Scott Everton, former United States ambassador to Burma (1961-1963), and an ordained Baptist minister, college administrator, and executive with the Ford Foundation; by family descent to the current private collection, Massachusetts. N.B. There is an incomplete sketch of an elephant's head on the reverse. John Scott Everton first visited India shortly after World War II as a representative of the American Friends Service Committee working on famine relief. He returned to India many times throughout his career which led him to positions in Burma, Turkey, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Estimate $4,000-6,000 Inscribed "5687" in pencil on the reverse.
