Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887-1972) Woman Signed in Bengali l. r. Tempera on heavy paper, 14 3/4 x 10 3/4 in. (37.4 x 27.3 cm), framed. Condition: Affixed to window mat with tape to edges on the reverse, creases l.l., scattered small pigment losses and accretions, tape remnants to edges on the reverse. Provenance: Collection of John Scott Everton, former United States ambassador to Burma (1961-1963), and an ordained Baptist minister, college administrator, and executive with the Ford Foundation; by family descent to the current private collection, Massachusetts. N.B. There is a similar unfinished and trimmed composition on the reverse. John Scott Everton first visited India shortly after World War II as a representative of the American Friends Service Committee working on famine relief. He returned to India many times throughout his career which led him to positions in Burma, Turkey, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Estimate $4,000-6,000 Framed dimensions: 21 1/4 x 17 1/4 x 3/4 in.
