Norman Carton (American, 1908-1980) Fontamara Signed "Carton" l. l., signed and dedicated on the reverse, identified and titled on an unattributed label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 18 x 14 in. (45.7 x 35.6 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure, drying cracks, minor surface grime. Provenance: Gift of the artist to the great uncle of the consignor, then by family descent. N.B. The dedication on the reverse reads, "For my friend John/a souvenir of good/times together/Norman/N.Y. 3/20/77." The person referenced in the inscription was John Andrews (a.k.a., Andreev and Andrew), a fellow artist and friend of Norman Carton. Estimate $700-900 The surface is largely stable but there are two tiny losses near the left edge. The frame measures 19 1/4 x 15 1/2 x 1 1/2 in.
