Julie Heffernan (American, b. 1956) Self Portrait as Decoy Signed and dated "J Heffernan © 2005-6" on the reverse, identified on a label from P·P·O·W/Pilkington-Olsoff Fine Arts, Inc., New York, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 62 x 54 in. (157.5 x 137.2 cm), framed. Condition: Good. N.B. Julie Heffernan's lush, intricate self-portraits draw on myriad art historical and literary sources including Hieronymus Bosch and the Brothers Grimm. She centers her form in front of surreal natural landscapes that often question environmental sustainability and the human toll on nature. Here Heffernan replaced the upper half of her figure with a lavish floral bouquet, calling to mind Old Master still lifes, and clad her lower half in an opulent silken skirt. Reptiles writhe beneath her and soldiers from different eras throughout history battle behind her, ignorant of the bucolic classical landscape surrounding them.
