Silver Imperial Japanese Navy and American Fleet Trophy Punch Bowl, Japan, Meiji Period, c. 1908, double-walled bowl with weighted base, the sides decorated with embossed flags of the United States and Japan, roses, and chrysanthemums, the base engraved "A Duplicate of the Trophy rowed for by boats of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the American Fleet at their meeting at Yokohama, October 23rd 1908," one of a pair of trophies given to fleet commanders at the event, the bottom with Japanese silver marks for Shigemitsu Sei, ht. 10 5/8, wd. 14 5/8 in., approx. 126.1 troy oz. (stem possibly weighted). Note: In October 1908, the United States Navy's "Great White Fleet" visited Yokohama, Japan, as part of its world tour. Lot includes a book on the Great White Fleet. Estimate $2,000-4,000 Few minor abrasions to interior and pinprick dents to upper lower rims. Small spot of corrosion to foot. Otherwise in good overall conditon.
