"A. Houtenbrink Eyes, Nerves, Broken Glasses Replaced" Trade Sign, Boston, c. 1917, the sign with gilt lettering and image of an eye on a black background, breadboard ends, ht. 18, wd. 24 in. Note: A court case was brought against Anthony Houtenbrink in 1920 alleging that he referred to himself as a "Doctor of Ophthalmology" and by using the phrase "Nervous Systems Measured and Analyzed" he was illegally practicing medicine in Boston. He was found to be in violation of the law. As a result it appears that he painted over the word "NERVES" on his sign. Printed transcript of the court case included with the lot.
