American School, 19th Century Spring Woodland Flowers and Ferns. Unsigned. Watercolor on cardboard, 8 1/8 x 6 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Toning, clear varnish or similar brushed over the central composition, fine craquelure, very minor surface scratches. N.B. The work seems related to Louis Prang chromolithographs. One artist whose florals in this style were reproduced by Prang was Olive E. Whitney (American, c. 1861-1897). Often these included a small woodland animal or bird in the composition. Estimate $200-400 The painted areas of the board have a glossy sheen, suggestive of gum arabic, with the resulting fine, stable craquelure. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact.
