Lovis Corinth (German, 1858-1925) Two Lithographs on Old Testament Themes: Achior Hanged from a Tree and Kain. Both signed "Lovis Corinth" in pencil beneath the image l.r.; Achior published in 1910 for Das Buch Judith by Pan-Presse, Berlin; Kain signed "Lovis Corinth" and titled within the matrix, from Krieg und Kunst, plate 6, published in 1915 by Julius Bard Verlag, Berlin. Lithographs on paper, Kain with hand-coloring, image sizes to 11 x 10 in., unmatted, unframed. Condition: Achior with water staining, both with toning and soiling to the margins. N.B. In the Book of Judith, the Ammonite leader Achior proclaimed to Holofernes that if Holofernes attacked the Israelites, their God would successfully defend them. In revenge for this warning that undermined his ego, Holofernes had Achior left bound to a tree in Israelite territory. When Judith later showed Achior the severed head of Holofernes, he 'believed firmly in God' and was converted to Judaism.
