Ames U. S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Officer's Saber and Scabbard Presented to Major Francis N. Clarke, 4th and 5th U.S. Artillery, c. 1862-65, gilt-brass grip with foliate designs on the pommel and guard, wire-wrapped shagreen grip, engraved blade marked "Ames Mfg Co/Chicopee/Mass" on the ricasso, blade engraved with foliate designs, panoply of arms, and "U.S.," steel scabbard with gilt fittings, engraved on the throat "F.N. Clarke, U.S.A./from/B. Pickman," blade lg. 34 3/4 in. Note: Clarke was promoted to Captain in the 4th U.S. Artillery on July 15, 1852. After the start of the Civil War he was promoted to Major and transferred to the 5th U.S. Artillery on August 5, 1862. He was appointed Chief Mustering Officer of Massachusetts on September 21, 1863, and fought in some of the major battles of the Army of the Potomac, including chief of artillery for Sumner's Corps during the battle of Antietam before becoming the CMO. Estimate $3,000-5,000 Sword is in overall very good condition. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
