U. S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword and Scabbard Identified to Lieutenant John A. Lovell, 34th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, c. 1862, brass hilt with foliate designs, wire-wrapped shagreen grip, blade marked on the ricasso "W.H./Horstmann/& Sons/Philadelphia," blade etched with foliate designs panoply of arms, leather scabbard with brass fittings, throat marked "Presented to/Lieut. John A. Lovell/Co. A. 34th Regt./by his friends/Worcester Aug. 11th, 1862," back of the throat marked "AMES MFG. CO./CHICOPEE/MASS," blade lg. 30 1/4, overall lg. 34 3/4 in. Note: John Lovell enlisted on April 16, 1861, as a sergeant in Company G, 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted on August 6, 1862, to 1st Lieutenant in Company A, 34th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged on November 8, 1864, for wounds received at Lynchburg, Virginia. Estimate $600-800 Hilt is in good condition but has some remnants of brass cleaner, blade has some light wear but no rust, the scabbard has some damage between the middle band and drag but is intact, having an Ames scabbard and Horstmann sword this may have been put together at some point.
