Xanthus Russell Smith (American, 1839-1929) Two Genre Scenes: Mother, Infant Son, and Daughter and Infant, Child, and Mother Playing in an Interior. Mother initialed and dated "X.S. 1867" on the mounting paper, now detached, Infant unsigned, both identified on labels from Schwarz Fine Paintings, Philadelphia, affixed to the frame backings. Oil on paper and canvas, respectively, sizes to 7 7/8 x 6 in., framed. Condition: Infant with minor dots of retouch to the mother's skirt. Literature: Schwarz Fine Paintings, The Smiths: A Family of Philadelphia Artists (Philadelphia Collection LXIV) (Philadelphia: The Schwarz Gallery, 1999), nos. 148 (RS 3388) and 149 (RS 3532), p. 56. Estimate $300-500 The signature fragment from "Mother, Infant Son, and Daughter" is currently encapsulated and stapled to the back of the frame. The title of the painting is confusing because the son, who is seated on the right, is clearly not an infant and is depicted holding a stick and hoop. The family group is shown huddled outside and without shoes. However, the painting does conform to the illustration in the Schwarz catalog referenced above.
