Ellen Macauley (American, Early 20th Century) Higgledy-Piggledy, alternately titled The Orange Stealer. Initialed "EM**" l.l., titled on a fragmentary label afixed to the reverse, with a note in the artist's hand affixed to the reverse. Gouache and ink on board with partial cradling, 23 3/8 x 15 1/8 in., framed. Condition: Cracks to board u.r., surface losses, retouch, scattered abrasions, craquelure, surface imperfections and grime. Exhibitions: The Art Center, New York, December 27, year unspecified, per note on the reverse. N.B. The top of the composition is inscribed with the following nursery rhyme: "Higgledy Piggledy my mother's maid. She stole oranges-I'm afraid. Some in her pocket, and some in her sleeve.
