Frank Weston Benson (American, 1862-1951) Two Impressions of Springing Teal, 1930, trial proof C-1 plus an impression of the published state of 150 (Paff, 306). Both signed "FrankWBenson." in pencil l.l., the proof impression with the stamp of the Boston Public Library, Merrill Bequest (Lugt, 4745). Drypoints on different papers, plate sizes 13 7/8 x 9 3/4 in. (35.2 x 24.7 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Both with full margins and deckled edges to three sides, pencil annotations l.l., old hinges or tape to corners of published state (recto), proof with ink and wear to lower margin. Provenance: Descended within the family of the artist. N.B. The C proof is the last of the trials before the published state, and comparison between the two shows that for the final version, Benson introduced more marsh grass to the immediate foreground and added additional modeling to the bird.
