John French Sloan (American, 1871-1951) The Lafayette, 1928, sixth and published state of 100 (Morse, 233). Signed "John Sloan" in pencil l.r., signed and dated within the plate, inscribed "100 proofs" in pencil l.l. Etching on paper, plate size 5 x 6 7/8 in. (12.6 x 17.4 cm), framed. Condition: Toning, mat burn, not examined out of frame. N.B. The lot is accompanied by two booklets: John Sloan New York Etchings (1905-1949) 67 Works edited by Helen Farr Sloan, 1978, and The Art of John Sloan - 1871-1951, Walker Art Museum, Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, 1962. Estimate $300-500 Out of the frame the sheet is wove paper measuring 9 x 12 3/4 in, and with deckled edges. It is quite toned, has mat burn (as previously mentioned), and has pinholes to the margins. It is taped to the facing mat with masking tape along the upper edge (verso). There are several loses to this edge, well away from the image. The frame measures 13 1/4 x 14 1/2 x 1 in.
