Ernesto Bensa (Italian, active c. 1863-1897), After Oswald Achenbach (German, 1827-1905) A View of the Vatican from Via Cassia Unsigned, titled in a fragmentary note signed "E. Bensa" affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. (41.0 x 51.0 cm), framed. Condition: Surface accretions, varnish discoloration, fine craquelure, surface grime. N.B. This landscape is a copy after a large painting by Oswald Achenbach in the National Museum in Warsaw, Poland. Although less familiar to modern audiences, Oswald and his brother Andreas Achenbach were considered premiere landscape painters in 19th-century Germany, and Oswald was most noted for his Italian subjects. Estimate $700-900 Framed dimensions are 18 5/8 x 22 5/8 x 1 5/8 in. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
