Fairfield Porter (American, 1907-1975) Skiff Unsigned, identified on an unattributed typewritten label affixed to the reverse, inscribed and titled "L739... " on the reverse, additionally inscribed "Maine - Sketch/Fairfield Porter" on the reverse, dated to 1970 in the catalogue raisonné (see below). Oil on canvasboard, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. (16.5 x 24.0 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered retouch. Provenance: Ruth Gwendolyn Hunt-Raymond; David Hunt Raymond; Barridoff Galleries, Lot 164, July 31, 2002; through to the current private collection, Massachusetts. Literature: Joan Ludman, Fairfield Porter: A Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings, Watercolors, and Pastels (New York: Hudson Hills Press, 2001), cat. no. L739, p. 265 (illustrated). Estimate $20,000-30,000 The largest areas of retouch lie at lower center and upper left. When the painting was removed from its frame, we were able to see a small tack hole at the lower center edge and a small nick at the upper center edge, presumably where another tack once held the canvasboard in place when the artist was working. No additional condition issues to report. Frame dimensions: 11 x 14 x 1 1/4 in. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
