Hugh C. Robertson (1845-1908) for Dedham Pottery Experimental Glaze Vase, Dedham, Massachusetts, c. 1895, marked "Dedham Pottery" and "HCR," ht. 7 3/4, dia. 4 1/2 in. Note: Hugh C. Robertson was an American potter known for his glaze experimentation. Robertson apprenticed at the Jersey City Potter in 1860. In 1868, he worked in his father's shop in Chelsea, Massachusetts. In 1872 this shop was incorporated into the Chelsea Keramic Art Works (CKAW). In 1888, while at CKAW, Robertson worked ceaselessly to reproduce Chinese sang de boeuf glaze. In 1891 he established Chelsea Pottery, in Dedham, Massachusetts, which became the Dedham Pottery Company in 1895. Estimate $1,500-2,500 No cracks or visible signs of repairs. There are areas near the neck where the glaze cascades down onto the body where there appears to be some glaze loss. There are glaze skips on the neck and around the foot.There are two cracks on the underside of the base which appear to have been in the making. See additional images.
