Arthur J. Stone (1847-1938) Sterling Silver Lobed Bowl, Gardner, Massachusetts, early 20th century, maker's mark with hammer, "C" for David Carlson, ht. 5 1/8, dia. 9 1/2 in., approx. 24 troy oz. Note: Stone was born, trained, and worked in Sheffield, England, and Edinburgh, Scotland, before traveling to the United States in 1884. In 1901, Stone set up his workshop in Gardner, which operated under his name until its sale in 1937. Following the Arts and Crafts tradition, he was one of the last master silversmiths in America to train apprentices to carry out designs in hand-wrought silver.
