Four Alvar Aalto (Finnish, 1898-1976) for Artek Model 153B Short Benches, Finland, mid to late 20th century, designed 1945, birch with slatted rectangular tops supported on four L-legs, three stamped "Artek," ht. 17 1/2, wd. 28 1/2, dp. 15 1/2 in. Note: Aalto was a Finnish architect and designer of furniture, textiles, and glassware. The span of his career, from the 1920s to the 1970s, is reflected in the styles of his work, ranging from Nordic Classicism in his the early work, to a rational International Style of Modernism during the 1930s, to a more organic modernist style from the 1940s onwards. He is celebrated as the inventor of bent plywood furniture. Estimate $20-200 Very Good to good condition. The two darker benches are in very good condition, as well as one of the lighter benches. These three are all stamped 'Artek'. The bench in good condition with some water stains and scratches does not have a brand and bears a label from Scandinavian Design. This bench is also constructed differently in that it does not have a piece of wood attached to the underside between the two legs.
