Erwine (1909-2003) and Estelle Laverne (1915-1997) for Laverne Originals Daffodil Chair, United States, c. 1960, acrylic, from The Invisible Group, unmarked, ht. 23, wd. 32, dp. 27 in. Note: Erwine and Estelle Laverne were artists that designed hand-painted wallpaper, furniture and fabrics. The couple met in 1932 at the Art Students League New York where they were both studying painting. They married in 1934 and formed Laverne International in 1938. Their "Invisibles Group" came out in 1957 and included the "Tulip," "Jonquil," "Daffodil," and "Lilly" chair. The collection received critical acclaim for its innovative designs. Their works were included in the Museum of Modern Art Good Design Exhibits in 1949, 1951, 1952, 1955 and 1956. Estimate $800-1,000 A few scattered scratches.
