Diquis Gold Avian Pendant, Costa Rica, c. 800-1500 AD, possibly an eagle, with projecting ears, large round eyes, and downturned openwork beak, the projecting taloned feet finely detailed, with spread wings, and large flattened bipartite tail, a suspension loop at the back, gold content 38.1 grams, at 79%, ht. 2 1/2, wd. 2 in. Provenance: Collected by George Washington Goethals (1858-1928), while working on the Panama canal; then by descent through the family.
