Basilius Besler (German, 1561-1629) Two Botanical Engravings with Hand-coloring: Lilium montanum flore and Hepatica aurea flore Presumed to be from Hortus Eystettensis, 1613. Hand-colored copper plate engravings on paper with letterpress text on the reverse, sight size 18 1/2 x 15 3/8 in. (46.7 x 39.0 cm), framed. Condition: Rippling, toning, foxing, not examined out of frames. N.B. The Hortus Eystettensis is a codex produced by Basilius Besler in 1613 of the garden of the Bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The Latin title translates as "The Garden at Eichstätt." The Bishop, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, commissioned Besler to produce the work, which he compiled over sixteen years, although the bishop died before its completion.
