French, 15th century. A giltwood reliquary box or châsse in the French Gothic style, the casket of typical rectangular form with sharply pitched roofline and triangular gables with lift off lid seamed at the base of roofline, the whole with ornately carved reticulated tracery - the body with pairs of lancet windows set under a pointed quatrefoil within a pointed arch, the roof planes to each side with double eight-pointed pierced rose windows reserved on a pierced ground with raised banding along roofline punctuated with raised cruciform carved blocks, and the gables each with single arched transom window bearing eight triangular sections under a further reticulated ground. Box body and roof gables lined with textured red fabric applied to a later wooden liner. Approximate height 11.375", width 13.75", depth 8.375". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
