Ancient Apulian Red-figured Volute-krater, c. 340-330 B.C., handles terminating at swans' heads to the shoulder, human masks to the rim, decoration depicting a youth seated within a naiskos and holding a spear and wreath, large female head in profile on the reverse, approx. ht. 22 3/4 in. Note: Similar to one from the Collection of the Villa Borghese; Sotheby Parke Bernet, May 4, 1974, no. 52. Estimate $7,000-10,000 Detached at an old restoration. several other large areas reassembled and restored. Some inpainting at points of restoration. Chips to base. The vase seems to reattach cleanly to the lower body with no clear evidence of any missing parts. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
