Polk: Portfolio of 11 original photographs" - 1932-1946, gelatin silver prints, limited edition 6/60, published by South Light (1981), each print pen signed to lower right margin, colophon signed and numbered by the artist in pen with interior essay pen signed by Pearl Cleage Lomax. Important scarce complete portfolio of 11 works by African American photographer Prentice Hall Polk featuring images of Polk’s colleagues and associates at the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), portraits of African American individuals and families, and depictions of former slaves. The portfolio comprising one print each of Catherine Moton Patterson, Mildred Hansen Baker, Abigail Kyzer, The Pipe Smoker, George Washington Carver, Margaret Blanche Polk, Mr. & Mrs. T. M. Campbell and children, The Boss, Henry Baker, Theodore and Cornelius Polk, and Old Women. Accompanied with original maroon fabric covered clamshell box printed in black to front "P.H. Polk" and introductory essay signed by the author and the artist. Each photo sheet approximately 11" x 14". Clamshell approximately 21.75" x 17.25" x 2.75". Provenance: Property from the Private Collection of Helen Ballard, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: The year 2011 marked the first time ever that Christie's sold a print by P. H. Polk, the print being one of "The Boss" (as included in this lot), which sold for $1,750.
