[Madison, James] Stephen Cassin Appointment as Master Commandant in the Navy, dated September 11, 1814, printed document accomplished in manuscript, framed with an engraving of James Madison and Stephen Cassin, ht. 16 3/4, wd. 13 3/4 in. (sight). Stephen Cassin (1783-1857) entered the navy as a midshipman in 1800. As a lieutenant during the War of 1812, he commanded the Ticonderoga at the Battle of Plattsburgh and was awarded a Congressional gold medal for his service.
