Group of Embroidered Textile Roundels and Accessories, China, late 19th/early 20th century, five single roundels of varying sizes, the largest embroidered with three boys playing with a qilin, a pair of roundels embroidered with butterflies and peonies in satin stitch, a mirror case embroidered with bats and peaches, and two blue brocade and embroidered dudou, roundel dia. to 17 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner. Estimate $800-1,000 Some wear to the red ground fragments, with some loose couched threads on the boys and qilin roundel. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
