Dutch School, 17th Century Village View with Figures and Dogs on a Lane Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 35 3/8 x 42 5/8 in. (90.0 x 108.2 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, varnish discoloration, minor surface grime. N.B. The painting at hand was recently reviewed by a curator from the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History) who suggested that the work may be attributed to Joost Cornelis Droochsloot from the 1630s, with the proviso that the work was not seen in person and the varnish discoloration made some elements difficult to read. The attribution was suggested by the compositional scheme and architecture, rendering of foliage, and figure types depicted, although Droochsloot tended to populate his works with more figures. Estimate $1,000-1,500 Framed dimensions are 36 1/2 x 43 5/8 x 1 1/4 in. There are two areas that appear to be old repairs, but the areas do not fluoresce, indicating the work was done at least 25 years or so ago. A faint label on the stretcher bears a handwritten four digit number that is very faded but seems to start with 1 and end with 4. Several areas of craquelure, which are stable. Varnish is very darkened, with one area where the droplets are visible. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
