Alice Morgan Wright (American, 1881-1975) La Cigale Signed "AMWright/1916" and titled in the bronze base, inscribed "Cast by Griffoul. Newark N.J. ©1916." around the edge of the base. Bronze with a brown patina, height 12 1/4 in. (31.0 cm). Condition: Minor dust and dirt to interstices, areas of wear to the patina. Provenance: Private collection, New York; private collection, Florida. N.B. Trained as a sculptor at the Art Students League from 1905 to 1910 and in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Colarossi, Alice Morgan Wright was also deeply committed to women's suffrage and rights. Her papers are held at her alma mater, Smith College. Bronze sculptures by Wright are rare. She often used symbolism in her works. The translation of la cigale to English is the cicada, accounting for the insect included in relief on the base of the sculpture and suggesting that this sculpture might be the personification of that melodious insect. However, the title might also refer to the Parisian theater, La Cigale, built in 1887, which featured performances by such luminaries as Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier, Yvonne Printemps, Arletty, Raimu, and Max Linder.
