Classical Rosewood-grained and Gilt Stencil-decorated Sleep Sofa, Boston, c. 1820-30, with scrolled arms, shaped and scrolled back with carved terminals, and turned legs ending in brass cap casters, the back folds down and accepts removable legs (included) to convert the sofa into a bed, arm ht. 33 1/2 in. Provenance: Descended in the Runels family of New Hampshire and Massachusetts; Stephen Score, 1996. Note: The bed bears the signature of Curtis (probably Benjamin) and Hubbard (probably Charles), ornamental painters known to be working in Boston in the 1820s.
