Carved Tiger Maple Scroll-top Desk/Bookcase, probably Massachusetts, c. 1750-60, the upper section with cornice centering a carved finial, above two paneled doors opening to a shell-carved interior of compartments, some with moveable dividers, set into lower slant-lid section with interior with shell-carved prospect door flanked by fluted document drawers, above four thumb-molded graduated drawers and bracket feet, ht. 91, wd. 37 3/4, dp. 20 1/2 in. Provenance: H.R. Sandor, New Hope, Pennsylvania, 1978. Estimate $3,000-5,000 The piece has been refinished, within the last 50 years, but the surface is not too shiny. The feet are original, the brass handle hardware appears original, the backboards are original but renailed. The door hinges appear original, though the slant-lid hinges are likely replaced (and the lid is patched where it broke out). There are no major repairs, replacements, or restoration.
